You've filled in your application. Now you get to pick one of the lovely Camp America interviewers from up and down the country. There is a wide network of wonderful past participants who are waiting eagerly to get you your dream placement - and because they've all spent at least one summer at a camp, they know how excited you are about it all. They also know just what camp directors are looking for. So while this is really just a simple chat about what you've put in your application, it's still important that you impress these guys too. I don't mean turn up in a three-piece suit, for God's sake. Unless that's your thing, then by all mean, rock it proudly. What I really mean is that your interviewer is the first real person you get to interact with and prove how much you want this (which I assume is a lot!) Anyway, after picking an interviewer near to you, they will get back to you pretty quickly with a suggested time, date and place for the meeting, but don’t be afraid to ask to change it if it doesn’t suit you. They don’t bite! Camp America also hold interview days at certain universities across the country, so you may end up at one of those. To give you an idea of how informal these things can be, mine was at a Costa in the middle of a shopping centre. Having been through it, I thought I'd share the best advice I have to help you on your way to success, and leave your interview with an even bigger grin than when you sat down. dress for the job you want
You aren't going to be working in an office in NYC this summer, so wear something casual, but be well presented. Try brushing your hair; make sure the clothes you threw on are clean and ironed. Take pride in your appearance. You are a walking advert for you. Get Your SH*T Together
You're going to need some paperwork with you in order to get your Police Check verified, so make sure you have all the documents necessary to do so. It tells you during your application what you'll need. I'd also take a print-out of your application form in case of any edits your interviewer recommends. A notebook and pen is great too, so you can note down any answers to questions you may have. Smile, Sunshine
It might be an interview, but remember that the job you're going for - it's fun. You're working out in the sun with kids to give them the time of their lives (not to mention you'll be having the best time too!) A smile may be the last thing you're thinking about while you're sitting opposite your interviewer, but slap one on anyway. I promise it does wonders for you as an applicant. Sell Yourself
Like any job interview, it's your priority right now to let the person in front of you know exactly why you'd be best for this job. The interviewer will ask you some questions about yourself/your experiences/your skills, and also some about how might handle certain situations at camp. Don't let the unexpected scare you - be honest, take a second to think before you speak, you'll be fine. Hopefully, with those in mind, you can pass your interview with flying colours. Remember - the people interviewing you have been exactly where you are now. Probably in the last few years. They will be similar in age to you, and they all want their interviewees to do well. They will probably want to keep up with how your application is going, and find out where you get placed! They can give you advice, so use them if you need to!
